Controlling Tooth Decay

There may be several reasons for the high rate of decay you are experiencing. Research has shown that there are things you can do to help slow down tooth destruction. The following is a partial list of recommendations to help you:

  1. Drink more water.

  2. Limit or stop between-meal snacks. Brush your teeth within 10 minutes after snacking.

  3. Brush your teeth both morning and night with fluoride toothpaste.

  4. Floss or use other methods to clean between your teeth at least once per day {a water pik is a great tool}.

  5. Cheese and/or peanuts may be eaten along with foods high in sugar or carbohydrates to help reduce the effects of the sugar on your teeth.

  6. Chew sugar-free gum or mints containing “xylitol” to reduce the risk of cavities.

  7. Rinse with “Biotene Rinse” if you suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth can be a result of being a mouth-breather or due to medications you may be taking.

  8. Use a fluoride gel every night before bed. You can purchase fluoride from our office for a minimal fee.

  9.  Do not use cough drops, hard candy, or breath mints that contain sugar.

  10.  Eliminate or reduce drinking carbonated beverages.

  11.  Reduce sugar in your diet.
