DO NOT SMOKE - Refrain for 48 hours.
DIET - Soft foods for the first 24 hours (please refer to our “Dental Soft Diet”). No foods with small pieces (Nuts, popcorn, etc.)
HOME CARE - Brush gently but thoroughly, even if gums are tender. Mouth rinsing is recommended using a recommended rinse. A manual toothbrush should be used until healing is complete and then the toothbrush should be discarded.
DISCOMFORT/PAIN - Should not be severe and usually subsides within a few hours to a few days. Discomfort from brushing should also subside within a few days. If symptoms are severe or persistent, or if an abscess develops, please call our Arlington Heights dental office immediately.
BLEEDING - Some bleeding is normal. If it persists, use gauze or a moist tea bag over the affected area and bite down firmly for ½ hour.
APPEARANCE - Root surfaces of your teeth may be more exposed when the swelling subsides. This may result in additional space between teeth.
TO MINIMIZE SYMPTOMS - If local anesthetic was used, avoid chewing until feeling returns to help eliminate possible injury to your tongue and/or cheeks. Teeth may be sensitive to temperature changes and sweets. Sensitivity to temperature may be intense and can last several days, but usually diminishes quickly. Use desensitizing toothpaste if it persists. A home fluoride application may be recommended.
PAIN MEDICATION - An over-the-counter analgesic, which you would normally use, should be taken as needed. Take as directed and only if needed.
Failure to follow the above instructions may lead to complications in your treatment.
Please call our office if you have any questions.
